Roof Design

Fire Safety

Navigating the rules and regulations around fire safety for flat roofs is fraught with conflicting information, multiple interpretations and various guidance and code-of-practice publications.

When it comes to the fire safety of flat roofs, there are many considerations for the building designer (architect), and this will ultimately drive the Radmat Building Products roofing system specification.

Approved Document B (or ADB for short) is technical guidance for specifiers, building owners and developers on how to meet the requirements of the Building Regulations 2010. The phrasing and terminology of certain clauses in this guidance have been the source of confusion and debate among readers since ADB was updated in 2018, following the Grenfell disaster.

Radmat has published some guidance on how to navigate the various interpretations of fire safety guidance titled Fire Guidance Note, and a copy can be downloaded below which addresses the following topics:

  • What is BROOF(t4)?
  • How best to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document B?
  • What is the difference between a balcony and a terrace?
  • What is a Relevant Building?
  • What is a Specified Attachment?
  • How can a green roof be fire-safe?
